Distance, Clinch, and Ground: The Biggest Single Rounds at Every Range

Every round in mixed martial arts is decided somewhere — at range, on the fence, or on the canvas. This record book takes the smallest complete unit of the sport, one five-minute round, and asks who landed the most from each of those three positions.

Splitting by round changes who shows up. A fight-long positional record belongs to whoever held their preferred range the longest, and that usually means a five-round main event. A round record has a hard ceiling of five minutes, so it measures density instead of duration: how completely one athlete owned a single position before the horn. A prelim fighter who took someone down early and never let them up can sit above a champion who ground out twenty-five minutes.

    Reading the three tabs

Every entry is one fighter's landed strikes from one position in one scored round, taken from official per-round statistics, with the attempted count shown alongside it. Use the Distance, Clinch, and Ground tabs to move between ranges and the division filter to find the record inside a weight class. Each row shows which round the performance came from and links straight to the fight.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What do the Distance, Clinch, and Ground tabs rank here?
Each tab ranks the highest count of significant strikes landed from one position inside a single scored round. Distance covers exchanges at open range, clinch covers close-quarters work against the cage or in the body lock, and ground covers strikes landed once the fight has hit the mat.
Why does a round record favour different fighters than the fight record?
A fight total rewards whoever sustained a position longest, so twenty-five-minute main events crowd the top of that board. A round total asks a narrower question: who did the most inside one uninterrupted five-minute window. That lets a single takedown-and-maul round, or one round of relentless range volume, outrank an entire championship fight.
Which position produces the most lopsided single rounds?
Ground and clinch numbers tend to spike hardest, because a fighter who secures and holds a dominant position controls the whole five minutes without being reset. Distance leaders usually come from open firefights where both athletes are throwing freely and neither is looking to grapple.
Can a fighter appear on this list from a round they lost the fight in?
Yes. The ranking looks only at strikes landed in that one round, not at the eventual result. Fighters who dominated a round and were then finished later still appear, which is exactly what separates a positional round record from a career or fight-long measure.
