How these rankings work
The belt records one night; ELO records all of them, which is why these boards disagree with each other and with the man holding the title.
How are the ELO and pound-for-pound rankings calculated?
Every fighter carries an ELO rating that adjusts after each recorded bout. The winner gains points and the loser drops them, and the amount depends on the rating gap going in, so upsets over higher-rated opponents move the needle the most. Pound-for-pound then blends those ratings across weight classes to rank fighters regardless of size.
Why is the champion not always number one?
The belt is decided by one fight on one night. ELO is decided by every fight a roster has had. A champion who won a close decision over a lower-rated challenger can sit below a contender on a long run of dominant finishes, which is exactly the disagreement these boards are built to show.
Why do these rankings differ from the official UFC rankings?
The official UFC rankings are decided by a media panel and factor in promotion and storylines. Our data-driven lists are pure math based on actual results, so they ignore hype and reward quality of opposition. The fan-voted boards add a third lens, pure community opinion, which is why the three can disagree.
