About Most UFC Title Fight Finishes

Championship bouts ended inside the distance - by knockout or submission

This leaderboard ranks UFC fighters by how many championship fights they finished — every title bout won by knockout, technical knockout or submission. It is a deliberately narrower question than who won the most title fights: a decision win keeps the belt just as well, but it does not answer whether a champion could end a fight against the best opposition the division could offer.

Why the numbers are small

Finishing anyone in a title fight is rare. The opponent is a champion or the top contender, the bout is scheduled for five rounds instead of three, and both camps have had a full training camp aimed at this one night. Plenty of fighters who finish most of their ordinary bouts win their championship fights on the scorecards, so a figure that would be unremarkable on our most finishes board is exceptional here.

Reading the split

The caption under each name breaks the total into knockouts and submissions and sets it against that fighter's title wins, which is where the character of a reign shows. Alex Pereira finished all six of his title wins and every one by knockout. Demetrious Johnson's seven are mostly submissions. Jon Jones has more title wins than anyone but finished just over half of them - 8 of 15. Three very different championship careers that a single number would flatten.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a title fight finish?

A championship bout that ended inside the distance — by knockout, technical knockout or submission — with the fighter listed as the winner. Decisions are excluded, which is the entire point of the board: it separates the champions who ended fights from the champions who won them on the cards. A win by disqualification is not a finish either.

Do interim title fights count here?

No. Only fights for the undisputed belt count, which is the same rule every title board on the site uses. An interim belt is not the belt: it is created when the champion cannot defend, so a win over another contender for it is not a win over the champion. The one exception is an interim title that became the real belt: when the undisputed champion was stripped, vacated or retired and the interim champion was promoted with no unification fight, the fights that won and defended that interim belt count. Five champions came through that door - Jose Aldo (UFC 200), Renan Barao, Robert Whittaker, Tom Aspinall and Andrei Arlovski. Our most title fight wins board applies the identical rule, which matters because this board's caption reads a fighter's finishes against their title wins — if one counted interim belts and the other did not, a fighter could show more finishes than wins.

Why does a fighter with fewer title wins rank higher?

Because this ranks finishes, not victories. Jon Jones has 15 undisputed title wins to Anderson Silva's 11, but Silva finished 9 of his and Jones 8 of his, so Silva ranks higher. The caption under each name gives the split — how many by knockout, how many by submission, and out of how many title wins — so you can see whether a fighter was a finisher or a decision machine at championship level.

Is finishing a title fight harder than finishing a normal one?

Considerably. The opponent is either the champion or the best available contender, championship bouts are five rounds rather than three, and both fighters have prepared for months for this specific night. That is why the numbers on this page are so much smaller than on our most finishes board.
