The Most Control Time in a Single UFC Round

Control time counts the seconds a fighter spends owning position — on top, on the back, in mount, or pinning an opponent against the fence. Compressed into one round, it answers a narrower question than the career or fight versions of the stat: who has come closest to holding an opponent for an entire five minutes without ever giving the position back.

That constraint is what separates this record from its single-fight counterpart. A fight total rewards duration, so the deepest grappling shutouts there belong to five-round main events with far more canvas to fill. Inside one round the clock is identical for everyone on the card, and a takedown twenty seconds into an opening round on the prelims can produce a number that no championship performance is able to beat — only match.

How a round of control is measured

Each row is one fighter's accumulated control seconds within a single scored round, drawn from official per-round fight statistics and rendered as minutes and seconds. Switch between the Single Fighter and Combined tabs, filter by division to find the most suffocating round in a given weight class, and check the round number on each entry — the difference between a fight-ending first round and a late round spent smothering a fading opponent is often the whole story.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the record for most control time in a single UFC round?
This page ranks the longest stretches of control ever logged inside one scored round, taken from official per-round statistics. Unlike most records, this one has a hard ceiling: no fighter can control for longer than the round itself lasts, so the top of the list presses right up against five minutes and the gaps between the leaders are measured in seconds.
How does this differ from the single-fight control record?
The fight record grows with every extra round, so championship-distance bouts with twenty-five minutes to fill occupy most of it. Here every fighter is handed the same five minutes, which turns the record into a question of completeness rather than accumulation. A prelim fighter who secures top position in the opening seconds and never surrenders it can rank alongside any champion.
Can combined control time in a round go past five minutes?
Almost never, because only one fighter can hold a controlling position at any given moment. The Combined tab is therefore best read as a measure of how much of the round was spent with somebody in control, which makes it a fast way to find the rounds that were fought almost entirely on the mat or against the fence.
Do rounds that end in a finish appear on this list?
They are included, but they are structurally disadvantaged: a round stopped at two minutes offers only two minutes of clock to accumulate. The largest figures naturally come from rounds that run the full five minutes with control established early, which is why finishes are rarer near the top of this leaderboard than on the striking round records.
